*Pro tip: All ghosts are broken down into 2 main types:
- Residual
- Intelligent
GHOST TYPES
*Do not go into any investigation unprotected!
BANSHEE
A Banshee is a natural hunter; also known as the singing siren, and will attack anything. It has been known to single out and stalk its prey before making a killing blow.
- A Banshee will only target one person at a time, although they are weak to crucifixes and will be less aggressive when near one. They are known to "sing" or hum melodic tunes.
- Banshees can be identified by using a video camera to look for orbs, a D.O.T.S projector, and a UV light to look for fingerprints when they interact with objects such as doors or light switches. Another way to identify a Banshee is by listening with a parabolic microphone for a distinctive screech.
DEMON
A Demon is one of the worst ghosts to encounter as they are known to attack victims without reason. Demons are more aggressive and will hunt more frequently and ruthlessly than any other ghost type. They are also able to initiate a hunt or attack regardless of a victims sanity level. Demons are popularly known to possess victims as well, and in extreme cases the possession can only be cured with an exorcism.
- Demons are weak against Ouija boards as they will not be able to lower your sanity whereas using a Ouija board to ask other ghost types questions will lower your sanity significantly. Demons are also weak to crucifixes as when dealing with a demon, crucifixes have a wider range of effectiveness.
- Demons can be identified by using a UV light to look for fingerprints when they interact with objects such as doors or light switches, by leaving out a book or piece of paper for them to write in, as well as sudden freezing temperatures when they are nearby,
DEOGEN
Sometimes surrounded by an endless fog, Deogen have been eluding ghost hunters for years. These ghosts have been reported to find even the most hidden prey, before stalking them into exhaustion.
- Deogen are extremely fast when in pursuit of a hunter, but slow significantly when in direct eye sight, making them vulnerable to be warded off with a smudge stick. You cannot hide from a Deogen, as they will always know where you are. Deogen will not hunt until the investigator has below half sanity.
- Deogens can be identified by using a D.O.T.S projector to view silhouettes passing through, a book or piece of paper for them to write in, as well as a spirit box/voice box with which they will produce a distorted sound unique to this ghost type.
GORYO
As far as ghost types go, the Goryo is much more tame. They can be mistaken for being "shy" as they can typically only be seen through a camera.
- Goryos can be quite evasive since they can only be seen through a camera. They also tend to wander more frequently than other ghost types, meaning if you believe you have found the location of a Goryo; it very well could move locations before you have time to set up your equipment.
- The Goryo can be identified by using a D.O.T.S. projector, and observing the projector through a camera. If someone on your team notices a silhouette pass through the project through a camera but NOT in person, that is typically a strong indicator of dealing with a Goryo. Additionally, you may also use an EMF reader in which this ghost will set it off all the way to level 5 if nearby or interacting with objects. Goryos will also leave behind fingerprints, so a UV light is recommended.
HANTU
A Hantu is a rare ghost that thrives in the coldest climates. The cold seems to make them more aggressive and empowered. This makes them an unexpected threat in certain cases. Since the Hantu thrives in cold temperatures, they can usually be found in basements, cellars, or abandoned buildings with a lack of heat source.
- Colder temperatures are a strength for this ghost, but this fact can also bring forward an obvious weakness: warmth. Keeping an area warm with candles, a lit fireplace, or electrical heat will slow down a Hantu and make them more tamable.
- It is a given that identifying a Hantu comes with freezing temperatures, but they can also be identified with ghost orbs viewable through a video or photo camera. Hantu's will also leave behind fingerprints on objects they interact with. Bringing a UV light is recommended along with a lighter or alternate heat source.
JINN
A Jinn is a territorial ghost that will attack when threatened. It has also been known to travel at significant speed. Jinn's will also drain sanity faster than some ghost types. Jinn's thrive and become faster when near a power source, making them dangerous and near impossible to escape when being chased.
- Turning off any power sources such as breakers or generators will slow down a Jinn and make them less aggressive, although due to their aggression and speed, it is best to avoid entering any space which may be occupied by a suspected Jinn. Since they are territorial, the chances of being able to remove the power source without being attacked are very rare. Attempting so without protection can be fatal.
- A Jinn can be identified by cooler temperatures, EMF readings reaching up to level 5, and fingerprints visible with a UV light.
MARE
A Mare has a distaste for all things light, making it the ghost of nightmares for those afraid of the dark. Mares have been known to turn off light switches, breakers, and even go as far as making lightbulbs explode if agitated. They will most likely be found in complete darkness, and so when pursuing a Mare, your sanity may be jeopardized if you did not bring a light source with you.
- Since Mares hate light so much and are stronger in the dark, having any light source such as a flashlight or flame in which the Mare cannot control is a fundamental tool.
- Mares can be easily identified by behavior around light; for example turning on a light switch and having it immediately turned off is a strong indicator of dealing with a mare. Mares give evidence of their presence by appearance of orbs through a video or photo camera, receiving feedback on a spirit box/voice box, and by using a piece of paper or book for it to write in. Although their behavior will typically give themselves away before any physical evidence.
MOROI
The Moroi is an extremely dangerous ghost. It is capable of "cursing" those it interacts with. It's known "curses" involve draining sanity at an accelerated rate, giving distorted unsettling responses through a spirit box/voice box, and marking a victim to be targeted specifically, similar to a Banshee. It's weaknesses are unknown as being in the presence of a Moroi can be extremely damaging to mental and psychological health.
MYLING
The Myling is a very vocal and active ghost, producing more sounds than most ghosts. For example door handles rattling, footsteps, creaking, whispers, and the sounds of objects moving.
Although, the Myling is rumored to be extremely quiet when hunting an investigator making it an unexpected threat since most expect it to be as loud in hunting as it is when idle. Do not let your guard down around a Myling.
- Mylings can be identified very easily with the use of a parabolic microphone, as they whisper, growl, and speak very clearly and very frequently. The parabolic microphone makes listening to these paranormal sounds much easier, and it is a staple for gathering evidence of a Myling. They will leave behind fingerprints on objects, write on papers, and give off EMF levels up to 5.
OBAKE
Obake are terrifying shape-shifters, capable of taking on many forms. They have been seen taking on humanoid shapes to attract their prey.
- The Obake will rarely leave a trace in it's environment making it evasive and all that much more dangerous and unpredictable. They can however, be easily identifiable by leaving behind handprints containing six fingers.
- Typically these handprints will be the dead giveaway of an Obake, however since they so rarely interact with objects it can be tricky to gather this evidence. Checking for ghost orbs through a video or photo camera and well as using an EMF reader is helpful in identifying an Obake.
ONI
Oni's love to scare their victims as much as possible before attacking. They are often seen in their physical form, guarding their place of death. An Oni is more active when there are more people around, and interact with objects more frequently when in front of an audience. They are the least shy of all known ghost types. Large apparitions of mist can be seen passing through walls when dealing with an Oni, although this is a rare interaction.
- Oni's are easily identifiable by their behavior, and are known to throw objects further and faster than other ghost types. Since they are so active, they are extremely easy to find.
- The Oni's "physical" evidence includes visible apparitions passing through D.O.T.S. projectors, cold temperatures that may reach freezing, and EMF levels up to 5 on nearly everything they interact with.
ONRYO
The Onryo is often referred to as "The Wrathful Spirit." It steals souls from dying victims' bodies to seek revenge. This ghost has been known to fear any form of fire, and will do anything to be far from it.
- Due to the Onryo's fear of fire, bringing a lighter or any other flame source in your investigation is highly recommended. The Onryo will be more tame, less aggressive, and easier to work with when working with a flame nearby. However, the Onryo will also attempt to put out this flame to gain back it's power.
- The Onryo is another ghost that can be identified quite easily based on behavior alone. Doing a "flame test" when dealing with a suspected Onryo is a quick giveaway. The flame test involves lighting a candle in the area where the ghost may be. If the candle is blown out fairly quickly; you know you are dealing with an Onryo. If using a flame is not an option, the Onryo can be identified by the use of a Spirit Box/Voice box, cold temperatures reaching freezing, and the appearance of orbs through a video or photo camera.
PHANTOM
A Phantom is a ghost that can possess the living, inducing fear into those around it. They are most commonly summoned from Ouija Boards.
-The Phantom can also be considered evasive as trying to capture a photo of a Phantom proves near-impossible as they seem to vanish under any exposure to photography. The Phantom will often wander close to people within it's range in an attempt to possess them. Keeping an EMF reader on you during an investigation is highly recommended, as a random reading of level 2 indicates the Phantom may be right next to you, and is trying to possess you.
- The Phantom can be identified using photo cameras as a test. If you see a Phantom physically, and try to take a photo then it vanishes both in person and on the photo just taken, then you know the ghost type you are dealing with. Bringing a UV light is also recommended to search for fingerprints left behind on objects, as well as a Spirit Box/Voice Box, and a D.O.T.S. projector. to make seeing the Phantom easier.
POLTERGEIST
One of the most famous ghosts, the Poltergeist. Known to manipulate objects around it to spread fear into its victims. Similar to how they are predicted in fictional media, the Poltergeist rarely makes a physical appearance, and likes to make a mess of it's surroundings.
- The Poltergeist is one of the easiest ghosts to identify based on it's behavior. They are not shy as they will immediately and aggressively mark their territory by throwing multiple objects at once, and even moving entire pieces of furniture. They can be tedious for homeowners to deal with, and are one of the most popular ghost types to be reported to investigators to help them clear out of public or private spaces.
- Some tools used to confirm the identity of a Poltergeist include a Spirit Box/Voice Box, and a UV light to check for fingerprints left on objects. A writing book may also be used, although previous reports state the Poltergeist is equally as likely to throw the book as it is to write in it.
RAIJU
A Raiju is a type of Demon that specifically thrives off of electrical power. They become more active, and more aggressive when surrounded with many electrical objects.
- Since the Raiju thrives off of electrical objects, it makes it easy to identify if using lots of equipment, however this can also prove risky as having items such as a Spirit Box, video camera, photo camera, D.O.T.S. Projector, Temperature Gun, EMF Reader and either a regular flashlight or UV flashlight which are turned on can all feed the Raiju's power. This makes dealing with a Raiju difficult, as these are all fundamental tools for locating and identifying ghosts.
- The Raiju will give off EMF levels up to 5, and will also pass through the D.O.T.S. projector frequently, as it will be attracted to it's energy. Ghost orbs are also reported being spotted when investigating Raiju's. It is recommended that when dealing with a suspected Raiju, that you only use or turn on one piece of equipment at a time.
REVENANT
A Revenant is a violent ghost that will attack indiscriminately. Their speed can be deceiving, as they are slow while dormant; however, as soon as they hunt they can move incredibly fast.
- The Revenant is described as one of the most dangerous ghosts to encounter due to it's speed and aggression. Hiding from a Revenant is your best chance at avoiding attack, as long as you break line of sight first.
- Little is known about the Revenant, although reports say areas where Revenants have been reported have extremely cold temperatures.
SHADE
A Shade is known to be very shy. There is evidence to suggest that a Shade will stop all paranormal activity if there are multiple people nearby.
- Although the Shade will avoid any interactions to give away it's presence, it can quickly turn from an easy investigation into a tricky one. Underestimating the Shade can be as risky as any other ghost if you do not monitor your sanity, or how long you are spending in a haunted area. If you or your teams' sanity becomes low enough, the Shade will disregard is elusive behavior and begin to interact, scare, and even attack any investigators nearby. The Shade will rarely give a physical appearance.
- The Shade may be identifiable by the lack of evidence throughout an extended period of time investigating, but can also be identify with use of an EMF reader which may reach levels up to 5 in range of a Shade. You may also use a piece of paper or book for the Shade to write in, and cold temperatures reaching freezing in the presence of a Shade is common.
SPIRIT
Spirits are very common ghosts. They are very powerful, but passive, only attacking when they need to. They defend their place of death to the utmost degree, killing anyone that is caught overstaying their welcome. The range of spirits is broad. They can be friendly, passive, or malevolent. They may also be either residual or intelligent types.
- Dealing with a friendly or passive residual type Spirit may be the luckiest and easiest encounter you have with the paranormal world. These are the most common and famous types of ghosts, as they are usually seen wandering places in which they occupied frequently in their lifetime; such as homes, schools, and places of work. They will be subject to a "routine" of sorts, following walking paths and performing acts such as sitting on chairs, going to bed, and using the kitchen. They come off more as physical, visible memories than ghosts. However the latter of this encounter can be tricky.
- Spirits are easily identifiable by the lack of any unique or unusual performances, but they may also be identified using tools such as an EMF reader and Spirit Box/Voice Box. Spirits are very easy to document as they typically have enough "energy" to display physical forms.
THAYE
The Thaye is another unpredictable and extremely dangerous ghost. It's extreme speeds and aggression makes it risky to be around. It's motives are unclear, and it seems trying to communicate with it through a Ouija Board proves unsuccessful as it seems to lie about itself.
MIMIC
Little is known about the Mimic ghost. It seems to adopt the behaviors and attributes of all currently known ghosts, making it nearly impossible to identify. It is unknown what it's weaknesses are, and it seems to have a long list of strengths. Interacting with a Mimic is not recommended as they are extremely unpredictable.
WRAITH
Wraiths are one of the most dangerous ghosts you will find. It is also the only known ghost that has the ability of flight and has sometimes been known to travel through walls. They also have a habit of "teleporting" from person to person, making surprise physical appearances.
- The Wraith is the only known ghost type capable of flight which is a clear giveaway of it's kind. The Wraith may also make objects vanish from certain places, and reappear in other places. An EMF reading of level 2 without reason is an indicator of a Wraith appearing at your location if you cannot see it physically. Wraiths are weak to salt as it is toxic to them. Classic salt circles or linings in a room may trap the Wraith, or keep a Wraith away from a home if placed correctly.
- The Wraith, aside from random level 2 EMF readings, may also give readings up to level 5 if very active. The Wraith will also give responses on a Spirit Box/Voice Box, and can be seen easier by placing a D.O.T.S. Projector and having the entity pass through it.
YUREI
A Yurei is an aggresive hunter-type ghost. They are vengeful spirits that have likely returned to the physical world for revenge. They have a strong effect on your sanity. Being near a Yurei for an extended period of time can be extremely damaging to your mental and psychological health.
- Little is known about the Yurei's weaknesses if any, as it's influence on a persons' sanity makes investigating these ghosts very short-term. Yurei's have been seen passing through D.O.T.S. Projectors as they often appear in physical form.
YOKAI
Yokai are common ghosts that are attracted to human voices. They can usually be found haunting family homes.
- Although the Yokai is sensitive to the sound of people speaking, it's general "hearing" abilities are lacking. The Yokai will only become agitated by the sound of voices within it's hearing radius, which is typically only the same room it occupies. Investigators have reported Yokai's "losing interest" or becoming "lost" as soon as you leave this hearing radius, and they appear to wander guideless until another voice is heard.
- The Yokai's hearing problem can make investigating quite easy for beginners as simply leaving the room will mark you almost entirely safe. The Yokai is social, so it will give responses on a Spirit Box/Voice Box, and can also be seen passing through D.O.T.S. Projectors. Ghost Orbs are frequently reported by home owners in Yokai cases.
TWINS
These ghosts have been reported to mimic each other's actions. They alternate their attacks to confuse their prey. They have been reported to bait investigators by one ghost acting as a decoy, while the other attacks. Not much else is known about The Twins as they constantly confuse investigators with their deceiving and extremely active behavior.
